Woman's Body Found In Delaware River After Pushing Child To Safety: Authorities

RIVERSIDE, NJ — The body of a 33-year-old woman was found in the Delaware River after she jumped in to help a child who was struggling on Monday afternoon, the Delran Township Police Department said.

At around 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Priscila Alvares Pereira Dos Santos was found dead after her body was located about 20 feet off a beach at Amico Island Park.

Drone operators from both the Burlington County Sheriff's Office and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management were utilized.

At around 4 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to 81 Norman Ave. for a report of two people who might have drowned.

According to officials, a woman jumped into the water to try and save a girl who was struggling.

She was able to push the girl to bystanders who safely pulled her ashore. The woman then went underwater and did not resurface.

A search was suspended at around 9:45 p.m. on Monday night before resuming again at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The death does not appear to be suspicious, according to officials.

The park is closed Tuesday to allow for authorities to continue work on the case.

Support is being collected online to help with funeral costs and the future of the woman's family.
