Wawa Plans For New Store To Be Revisited In South Jersey

VOORHEES, NJ — The plan for a new Wawa along Route 73 is set to be heard at the Voorhees Township Planning Board meeting on Oct. 14.

The hearing follows a lawsuit, years-long debates, and approvals in other towns.

The new store would be right at the border of both Voorhees and Berlin townships at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road.

Along with installing gas stations, plans for the new "super" Wawa include the left-turn stacking lane on Cooper Road extended to ease traffic, new landscaping while preserving existing trees, and stormwater upgrades that improve runoff quality and enhance groundwater recharge.

Mayor Rick Miller of Berlin Township called the project "a significant visual improvement of the existing conditions."

After already denying the plans due to concerns surrounding noise and traffic, Voorhees officials were met with a lawsuit from the developer.

By extending the actions, the Berlin Township Planning Board was able to approve the plan on Aug. 18, paving the way for this new chance for Voorhees to give its approval.

Construction cannot move forward without both approvals.

"Welcome to the Berlin Township business family, Wawa," Miller said later that night. "We're looking forward to seeing this project move forward and the positive impact it will have for our residents."
