Coach Faces Assault Charges After Kids' Softball Game Brawl: Morris Co. Prosecutors

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A man has been charged after getting in a fistfight after a kids' softball game in Morris County this week, prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, police were called to Lurker Park in East Hanover on reports of a physical altercation between adults following a youth girls’ softball game.

Authorities arrived to learn that Matthew J. Magaletta, 54, of Florham Park, had instigated the fight, prosecutors say. He was arrested and charged with two counts of fourth-degree simple assault.

Magaletta is listed as one of the coaches for the East Hanover/Florham Park Hornets softball team, according to New Jersey Hills Media Group.

NJ.com acquired footage of the fight, which shows it being between rival coaches.

The video shows two coaches shoving each other following the handshake line, NJ.com says. Several other coaches then jumped in as the fight "spilled down the first base line" while players and spectators watched, it adds.

Prosecutors have only announced charges against Magaletta at this time.
