Professional drummer Jakubu Griffin of Teaneck, New Jersey, experienced a career-threatening episode of severe neck pain and arm numbness while performing. Concerned about the potential for a long recovery from neck surgery, the 54-year-old musician sought an alternative.
Griffin, who has a notable performance history including international tours and collaborations with Grammy-winning artists, was diagnosed with a combination of arthritis, nerve compression in his neck, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Under the care of Dr. Gary Panagiotakis at Hackensack University Medical Center, he underwent a non-surgical rehabilitation program.
By committing to a consistent schedule of occupational and physical therapy, Griffin's symptoms improved significantly within a couple of months, allowing him to return to playing the drums without pain. He now advocates for fellow musicians to proactively address the physical toll of their profession and seek medical evaluation to understand all their treatment options.
