For 70-year-old Curlean Phillips, a 25-year battle with Lupus eventually led to severe kidney problems and the need for daily dialysis. The seven-day-a-week treatments took a heavy physical toll, tethering her to a machine and forcing her to cancel a trip to Dubai and a family vacation to Disney World.
When Curlean turned to Hackensack University Medical Center for a kidney transplant, she learned that the average wait for a deceased donor kidney is three to five years. Refusing to let her mother wait, Curlean's 41-year-old daughter, Chanda, stepped in to become a living donor.
Using a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted procedure, transplant surgeon Alexandra J. Erhardt, D.O., removed Chanda's kidney, while Michael J. Goldstein, M.D., Director of Organ Transplantation, performed Curlean's transplant. The robotic technique allowed Chanda to recover quickly and return to normal life.
Today, both mother and daughter are fully recovered. Untethered from daily dialysis, Curlean is finally packing her bags for Japan and heading to Disney with her family.
