NJ Hospital Circumcision Infant Injury Lawsuit Ends In $5M Settlement

FLEMINGTON, NJ — A $5 million medical malpractice lawsuit was settled tied to a 2022 circumcision procedure at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, where an infant was injured, according to court records.

The lawsuit was filed in July 2022 by the infant's parents. They allege their child was born at Hunterdon Medical Center on Feb. 9, 2022, and was scheduled for a circumcision two days later.

The complaint states that Dr. Michael Girgis, overseen and assisted by Dr. Cindy M. Barter and others, performed the circumcision using the Mogen clamp method.

The complaint alleges the procedure was negligently performed, causing the infant "to suffer a partial amputation of his penis."

As a result of the "botched circumcision and amputation," the infant was taken to Morristown Medical Center for emergency surgery.

The filing also claims the parents were not presented with options for the type of circumcision and were not told about risks or different clamps that could be used.

Court records show the settlement on July 23 includes structured payments.

The structured settlement includes annual $50,000 payments beginning Feb. 9, 2040, monthly payments beginning the same date and increasing 2 percent annually, plus lump-sum payments of $75,000 in 2047 and $125,000 in 2052.

The order also approves $104,040.57 in case expenses to Mazie Slater Katz & Freeman, LLC.

Hunterdon Medical Center did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
