This time of year is deer rutting season, which means there are more white-tailed deer on New Jersey roads.

“Collisions with deer pose a very serious safety threat and can cause significant damage to vehicles and possible loss of life,” said Dave Golden, Assistant Commissioner for NJDEP Fish & Wildlife. “It’s especially important that drivers be extra vigilant to this threat and take time to know steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of collision.”

Galloway police are reminding drivers to stay aware.

“Remember, motorist / wildlife collisions, particularly those involving large animals like deer can happen suddenly and present extreme hazards on the roadway,” police said. “The GTPD reminds all drivers to remain vigilant, especially during dawn and dusk hours when deer activity is highest. If you encounter wildlife on the road, try to brake firmly in your lane rather than swerving sharply, which can cause loss of vehicle control or secondary collisions.”
