Rabid Raccoon Found In South Jersey: See Where

BARRINGTON, NJ — A raccoon found in Barrington was confirmed to have rabies, the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services said on Wednesday.

On Saturday, a resident's dog got into an "altercation" with the animal in the backyard.

Barrington's Animal Control Officer gathered the raccoon and it was then screened at the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories in Trenton.

On Wednesday, the facility notified the Department that the raccoon was rabid.

There are no known exposures to humans, officials said, and proof of vaccination for the dog was received.

The dog was given a rabies booster vaccine and will be under confinement and observation for 45 days.

In order to reduce the risk of pets being exposed to rabid animals, keep them under direct supervision and get veterinary assistance immediately if they have been bitten or scratched.

Residents should also be cautious around open garbage cans and litter due to the ability to attract wild animals.

Avoid direct contact with wild animals while traveling abroad, especially in developing countries, as cases are common in those areas.
