Fireworks Celebration Postponed Over Extreme Heat In Franklin Township

FRANKLIN, NJ — Franklin Township has postponed its Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks because of an Extreme Heat Warning from the National Weather Service and a forecast calling for dangerous temperatures.

The event had been scheduled for Thursday, July 2. It has been moved to the rain date of Friday, July 10, according to the township announcement.

"The forecast calls for dangerously high temperatures and heat index values that could pose a serious health risk to attendees, volunteers, vendors, performers, and Township staff. While we know this is disappointing, the safety of our community must come first," according to Franklin Township Police.

The NWS issued a Code Orange air quality alert that is in effect on Wednesday. Additionally, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. on Saturday.

"Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees expected each day," according to the NWS.

Officials said the rescheduled event will now take place Friday, July 10 at the Franklin Township Municipal Complex at 475 DeMott Lane.

From 6 to 9 p.m., there will be food and fun followed by fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

"Thank you for your understanding, and please take precautions during the extreme heat by staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities, checking on family, friends, and neighbors, and never leaving children or pets in unattended vehicles," said police.
