Commuters Frustrated As Some PATH Trains Suspended, NJ Transit Trains Reduced

Rail commuters, who were already dealing with limited NJ Transit service due to track work, have lost another transit option for now.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Two PATH train lines between Hoboken and New York City were suspended through Friday evening due to a fire, a Port Authority spokesperson said.

The suspension added to commuter headaches because NJ Transit trains, another option for the New York/New Jersey commute, have been running on a limited schedule due to month-long work on a rail bridge.

The work has forced NJ Transit rail commuters to transfer in Hoboken to a bus, ferry, or (when running) PATH train. NJ Transit Slashing Rides In Half This Week: What To Know

Officials are still investigating the small fire, which broke out in one of the tunnels Friday morning, officials said.

Commuters said in social media posts that the buses were packed on Friday night.

At 11:28 a.m., Port Authority police and the Hoboken Fire Department responded to a track fire. The PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) lines run under the regular train station.

The station was evacuated, and no injuries were reported, said a Port Authority spokesperson.

As repairs are made, the lines from Hoboken to 33rd Street and Hoboken to the World Trade Center will remain suspended, said the spokesman.

The following alternate service will remain in place until further notice:

  • PATH is operating service between 33rd Street and WTC to accommodate transfers at Newport for NJ Transit light rail service.
  • NJ Transit rail is cross-honoring PATH at Hoboken, Secaucus, NY Penn Station, and Newark with bus 126 and 87.
  • NJ Transit light rail is cross-honoring at Hoboken, Exchange Place, and Newport.
  • NY Waterway ferries are cross honoring at Hoboken and Brookfield Place stops.

"The Hoboken Fire Department responded to the PATH Station inside of Hoboken Terminal on reports of a smoke condition," said Hoboken public safety spokeswoman Marci Rubin, earlier. "A small fire was discovered in the tunnel and quickly extinguished."

The fire doesn't affect regular above-ground NJ Transit trains. However, they are running on a limited schedule until March 15 due to track work, meaning commuters must transfer to another mode of transit in Hoboken. NJ Transit Slashing Rides In Half This Week: What To Know
