Mario's Pizza Closes For Month, Owner's Meeting With Pope, He Says

The owner of Mario's Pizza has closed for vacation, as they do each year, but this year is special.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Mario Albunia, the owner of Mario's Pizza in Hoboken, has closed the shop for a month for his annual vacation — but this time, it's special.

Albunia, known for running a family-friendly restaurant with unique toppings — and giving away turkey dinners each Thanksgiving to anyone in need — has also become a bit of an influencer on the order of "Cake Boss," sharing scenes from pizzeria life.

This week, Albunia claimed on social media that he'll be meeting with the pope.

Oh, and the shop is set to re-open on Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day, and the first day of school for the Hoboken Public Schools. (See the revised Hoboken 2026-2027 school calendar here.)
