Hoboken Will Restrict Drivers Coming In On July 4, Officials Say

In 2024, traffic leaving Hoboken after the fireworks lasted over six hours, officials said. They have a strict plan for this year.

HOBOKEN, NJ — While Hoboken won't be hosting its own July 4 fireworks celebration this Saturdasy, the mile-square city is expecting an influx of visitors to see the Macy's and Jersey City displays over the Hudson River.

And because traffic was tied up for six hours leaving town after the fireworks in 2024, the mile-square city will implement major restrictions this Saturday, they announced.

In fact, starting as early as 8 a.m. this Saturday, people coming into Hoboken will have to show proof of parking, employment in the city, residence, or some other authorized reason to enter, officials said.

Road Closures And Changes

Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour said, “This year’s Fourth of July celebration is especially meaningful as our nation marks 250 years of independence, and we are excited to welcome residents and visitors alike to celebrate along our beautiful waterfront. We ask everyone to celebrate responsibly, plan ahead, and avoid driving whenever possible."

Hoboken's Office of Emergency Management has issued a "gridlock advisory" for Saturday. In past years, cars have come to a standstill trying to leave the city on July 4 after the fireworks ended.

In fact, Jabbour said, "In 2024, traffic leaving Hoboken lasted over six hours."

The HPD Traffic and Transportation Unit has implemented a Limited Travel Access Plan, to help facilitate vehicle movement and maintain access for emergency responders.

Starting as early as 8 a.m. on Saturday, Hoboken police officers will be stationed at entry points to the city.

Access will be limited to residents and people with proof of pre-paid reserved parking in garages, business owners, and people traveling to work within the city, emergency personnel, transit vehicles, and other authorized vehicles, officials said.

Unauthorized people will be turned away, the city said.

"Visitors are strongly encouraged to avoid driving and use public transportation including PATH, NJ Transit rail, ferries, and the Hudson Bergen Light Rail to travel to Hoboken, and to walk or bike, whenever possible," the city said in message.

The following road closures are planned for July 4, beginning at 8 a.m.:

Streets will reopen as crowds, traffic, and clean-up allows.

Traffic management plans, including road closures, are subject to change.

How To Reserve Parking

Reserved parking available at municipal garages

Pre-paid reserved parking will be required on July 4 for all non-monthly customers at Garage B (28 Second St.), Garage D (215 Hudson St.), and Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.). An all-day event rate of $55 (not including transaction fees) will apply at these three municipal garages.

Sales will close on Thursday, July 2, at 11:59 p.m. or earlier if spaces sell out, the city said. They said they expect spaces to sell out quickly.

Drivers parked in all garages, including municipal and private facilities, may experience heavy delays exiting the garage in the evening after completion of the fireworks display.

Street Parking Will Change

Temporary no parking signs will be posted in various areas throughout the city to preserve emergency access lanes. Vehicles left in temporary no-parking zones or emergency access areas will be towed at the owner’s expense, the city said.

"There will be zero tolerance for violators blocking designated emergency routes or travel lanes following previous years where drivers abandoned their cars in illegal areas due to heavy congestion, blocking emergency access and creating hazardous conditions for first responders,' the city noted.

Temporary no parking signs will be posted in restricted areas no less than 72-hours prior to the restrictions.

Restricted Areas

The following properties will be closed to the public for 24 hours on July 4:

  • Pier C
  • Sgt. William Feskens Little League Field
  • Sinatra Park Soccer Field

The city also wanted to remind residents and visitors that there will be zero tolerance for driving under the influence, public drinking, disorderly conduct, or other unlawful behavior.

Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to Hoboken police at 201-420-2100, officials said.
