HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken residents will have to move their cars overnight so that the city can conduct street-by-street snow removal, at least through next Thursday, the city said Wednesday night.

The directive is a change in plan from Hoboken's original snow removal protocol.

The city had originally resumed street sweeping this week, but have re-suspended it to focus on clearing each street overnight. Street cleaning is suspended until at least this coming Monday.

Thanks to below-freezing temperatures and a January storm that dumped 11 inches of snow on the city, icy mounds still abound around town.

Garden Street, on Thursday

Temporary "No Parking" signs have been posted in areas that will have snow removal. Cars that are not moved will be subject to ticketing and towing, the city said.

The city and county have created this schedule of clearing these county roadways:

  • Feb. 5: Madison Street from Newark Street to 15th Street
  • Feb. 6: Grand Street from Newark Street to 15th Street
  • Feb. 7: Hudson Street between 15th Street and Observer Highway
  • Feb. 8: None
  • Feb. 9: Garden Street between 14th Street and Observer Highway
  • Feb.10: Park Avenue between Observer Highway between 14th Street
  • Feb. 11: Jefferson Street from Newark Street to 15th Street
  • Feb. 12: Adams Street from Newark Street to 15th Street

The city said the change was made after resident feedback.

Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher said Thursday, "The city is pivoting to overnight snow removal, and that’s a good thing. One of the hardest things for any leader to do is admit when a plan isn’t working and adjust...Moving snow removal to overnight hours will allow crews to work more efficiently, reduce traffic impacts, and clear more streets faster. The county has now also adjusted its approach after daytime plowing during street-cleaning hours proved ineffective."

Discount Parking

The city said that resident parking permit holders can use city garages at a discount for $6 from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., first-come, first-served.

The garages are Municipal Garage B (28 Second St.) and the Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.)
