Holmdel Township Committee To Vote On Land Use Public Advocate

HOLMDEL, NJ — The Holmdel Township Committee is set to vote on the establishment of a Land Use Public Advocate this fall.

Under a recently proposed ordinance, the committee would appoint an experienced attorney specializing in municipal land use to serve as a dedicated public advocate.

The advocate will be selected through a formal Request for Proposals (RFP) process to ensure top-tier legal expertise and impartiality, officials said.

Once appointed, the Land Use Public Advocate will participate in major land use proceedings before both the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment, specifically representing the interests of Holmdel residents on high-impact development applications—including those within township borders as well as adjacent regional proposals that could affect the community.

"This is an unprecedented step for Holmdel Township and a monumental win for our residents," Mayor Rocco Impreveduto said. "Major development proposals can often feel overwhelming or difficult for the public to navigate on their own."

"By establishing a dedicated Land Use Public Advocate, we are ensuring that our residents have a strong, qualified legal voice in their corner whenever major projects of significant public interest come before our boards," he continued.

"This initiative reinforces our unwavering commitment to protecting Holmdel's character and advocating for our neighborhood interests."

Brian Foster, the Deputy Mayor of Holmdel, agreed with Impreveduto, adding that "navigating complex planning and zoning applications requires legal and technical expertise."

"Appointing a public advocate ensures that Holmdel residents are backed by a seasoned municipal land use attorney who can rigorously scrutinize land use applications, ask the tough questions, and advocate for residents on proposed development both inside and directly adjacent to our borders," Foster said.

The Township Committee is inviting residents to participate in the legislative process as the ordinance moves forward.

A public hearing and final vote on the ordinance will be held Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Holmdel Township Committee Meeting Room (4 Crawfords Corner Road).

At the hearing, residents will have the opportunity to provide public comment on the proposed ordinance.
