Driver Killed After Car Leaves Route 15, Overturns in Sparta; 2 Injured

2 passengers survived after the 2025 Kia K4 struck a guardrail, became airborne over railroad tracks, and overturned, authorities said.

SPARTA, NJ — A Morris Township man was killed early Sunday when his vehicle left Route 15 northbound, struck a guardrail, became airborne over railroad tracks, and overturned in a wooded area, Sparta Township police said.

Ryan Mullins, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. in the area of Layton Lane.

Mullins was operating a 2025 Kia K4 with two female passengers when the vehicle left the roadway for reasons still under investigation. Both passengers were able to self-extricate from the overturned vehicle and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment, according to police. They were later released.

Route 15 northbound was closed for around nine hours while emergency personnel secured the scene and investigators worked.

The crash remains under investigation.
