Man, Dog Found Dead Following North Jersey House Fire, Police Say

An investigation into the cause of the second-alarm blaze is underway, authorities said.

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — A Sussex County man and a dog were found dead this last week after a structure fire, according to police.

On Friday, just before 5 a.m. first responders were called to 20 Odell Road in Vernon on reports of a house fire.

Authorities arrived to find the second-alarm fire had been "fully engulfed" in flames, police said.

Fire units were "quickly" able to extinguish the fire, authorities said.

Police found a 46-year-old man dead inside the burnt building. A dog was discovered to have died in the blaze as well.

The identity of the man has not been released at this time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to authorities.
