Unearthing History, One Page at a Time: Transcribing Applications for Citizenship in Indian Territor

These applications offer a firsthand look at a pivotal period in the history of the Five Tribes and the changing relationship between tribal governments and the federal government. The June 10, 1896, Act gave the Dawes Commission authority to determine eligibility for citizenship in the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole Nations. Applications often contain valuable details about family relationships, ancestry, residence, and community connections.

Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop; a limited number are available on site.

Unearthing History, One Page at a Time is a collaborative transcription series where volunteers convert historical documents into searchable digital text, supporting researchers, genealogists, and the preservation of history for future generations.

Registration is requested.
