Hopewell Borough Adds Pedestrian Safety Signal At Broad & Greenwood Intersection

The new Leading Pedestrian Interval feature gives walkers a seven-second head start before cars are allowed to move.

HOPEWELL, NJ — A busy Hopewell Borough intersection has a new safety feature designed to give pedestrians a critical head start before cars begin moving.

The intersection at Broad and Greenwood Avenue has been upgraded with Leading Pedestrian Interval signaling, a technology that gives walkers an exclusive walk signal — with traffic stopped in all directions — before vehicles are permitted to move.

In Hopewell, the feature provides roughly a seven-second head start for pedestrians crossing Broad Street when activated by pushing the walk button.

The upgrade is intended to increase pedestrian visibility, reduce conflicts between turning vehicles and walkers, and improve the likelihood that drivers will yield to people in the crosswalk.

The improvement follows a study conducted by Mercer County engineering consultants in late 2025 and a public presentation at a Borough Council meeting in February 2026.

The borough worked with the Mercer County Planning Office, the Mercer County Department of Transportation and the County Engineer's office to implement the change.
