Pennington Quality Market To Close After 66 Years, Reopen As McCaffrey's
The Rothwell family, who bought PQM in 1981, said McCaffrey's "is a natural fit" for the community-focused store.
PENNINGTON, NJ - Pennington Quality Market, a neighborhood grocery institution for 66 years, will close on June 13 and reopen as McCaffrey's Food Markets on June 15.
The Rothwell family, which has owned and operated PQM since Larry Rothwell purchased the store in September 1981, announced the transition this week.
"My father, Larry Rothwell, purchased the Market in September 1981. Through his vision and leadership, PQM grew into a trusted and well-respected business in our community. That success has been driven by the dedication of our team and the loyalty of our customers," co-owner Mike Rothwell said.

"As we considered the future of the business, it was important to find a partner who shares our values and commitment to excellence. McCaffrey's is a natural fit. We have known Jim McCaffrey III and Jim McCaffrey IV for many years, and we have great respect for their organization and the way they serve their customers and communities," Rothwell added.
Jim McCaffrey IV said the company was honored to take on the location.

"PQM has built an outstanding reputation, and we look forward to building on that strong foundation. Our goal is to continue delivering the high-quality products, service, and community focus that customers have come to expect," McCaffrey IV said.
The Pennington location will be McCaffrey's ninth store. The company also plans to open a replacement and expanded location in Doylestown, Pennsylvania in 2027.
Mike Rothwell and his sister, Barbara Rothwell Henderson, thanked PQM employees in the announcement, saying their "hard work, kindness, commitment, and personal connections with customers have been the true heart of Pennington Quality Market."
