Livingston Top Cop Shares Crime Data With Town Council [WATCH]

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston Police Chief Gary Marshuetz gave a “state of the department” address at this week’s town council meeting, updating the community with crime statistics, recent community events, and improvements within the LPD.

Marshuetz compared the town’s current crime statistics for the year to 2023, a year that crime “wasn’t the best.” He said that burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, and motor vehicle pursuits are all down from their 2023 levels.

The chief credited the gains to more officers on patrol and Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems, among other changes. The department has also been upgrading its call center, patrol vehicles, body cameras and other technology, he said.

Meanwhile, recent data from the FBI shows that Livingston's violent crime rate is significantly below national and state levels.

In 2024, there were 25 violent crimes reported in Livingston, according to the FBI’s online data explorer. That number was an increase from 2022, when there were eight violent crimes reported, and 2023, where there were 16. But it was still below levels seen several decades ago, including 1995, when 35 violent crimes were reported in the township.
