What would it feel like to suddenly hear that America had declared independence from Britain?
On Saturday, September 19, the Washington Township Historical Society invites the community to experience that dramatic moment firsthand during “1776 — The News of Independence Reaches German Valley,” an immersive living history evening at the historic Old Stone Church grounds in Long Valley.
Step back 250 years for a fun, lively, and entertaining evening as news from Philadelphia reaches German Valley. Guests will able, if they choose, to assume the roles of local residents — farmers, widows, soldiers, merchants, and others — and join in the conversations, questions, and uncertainty surrounding independence.
No costumes are required — just come ready to experience history in a whole new way.

 <li>Would independence be exciting… or frightening? </li>
 <li>What risks would families face? </li>
 <li>Would you support the cause? </li>
</ul>
“This program is designed to make history personal while creating a memorable and enjoyable, fun evening for the community,” said John Reed, president of WTHS. “Participants won’t just hear history — they’ll experience the conversations, uncertainty, and excitement that ordinary people may have felt in 1776.”
The evening will feature:
<ul>
 <li>Live authentic period music </li>
 <li>Delicious appetizers with local cheeses, cold meats, veggies, fruit and more</li>
 <li>Local wines, beer, cider and other beverages </li>
 <li>An interactive atmosphere on the grounds of the 250-year-old Stone Church</li>
</ul>
The event takes place Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5:00 PM (rain date Sept. 20).

Patriot’s Path And The Highlands Trail

Join the Washington Township Trails Committee for a community hike along interconnecting trails to explore historic lime kiln ruins. Participants can choose between a moderate 2.25-mile trek with a provided return ride or a more strenuous 3.5-mile round-trip hike, followed by light refreshments and conversation. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for this all-ages event celebrating history, hiking, and community.

On Sunday, September 27th, we are hosting our 6th Annual Pet Adoption Day (from 11am-3pm) at our Elmwood Park Financial Center at 680 River Drive, Elmwood Park NJ. Five local rescue organizations will be bringing their adoptable pets to the Financial Center parking lot to find their fur-ever homes! There will also be refreshments, food and giveaways. Rescue doesn't end when an animal leaves a shelter. It takes transportation, medical care, food, shelter, dedicated volunteers, fosters, and an entire community of supporters to get that animal from a difficult situation to a loving forever home.

Eleventh Hour Rescue is a primarily volunteer based, no-kill rescue that saves animals on Death Row from overcrowded high kill shelters, as well as taking in strays and owner surrenders before they go to the shelter. Eleventh Hour Rescue dogs and cats are cared for by our compassionate and dedicated team of volunteers and staff.
&nbsp;Whether in foster homes, our kennel, or adoption centers, each dog and cat receive a clean and safe living environment, fresh food and water, medical attention, and most importantly an abundance of love and care until they find their forever homes. We are dedicated to educating the community about the animal overpopulation problem and the importance of spaying and neutering, as well as microchipping. Our goal is to find the best forever home possible for all of our animals, no matter what breed, size, age, or medical need.
