Madison Area YMCA Board Appoints New Chief Executive Officer

The Madison Area YMCA Board of Directors has announced the appointment of YMCA executive Ann-Margaret Gutierrez as its new President & Chief Executive Officer, effective November 2. A seasoned and visionary nonprofit executive, Gutierrez brings more than 25 years of progressive YMCA leadership experience, including managing multi-branch operations and a steadfast dedication to the YMCA mission.

In her current role as Chief Operating Officer of the YMCA of Montclair, NJ, Gutierrez directs daily operations serving more than 14,500 members, supervising four executive directors and more than 550 full- and part-time staff. During her seven years at the Montclair Y, Gutierrez distinguished herself through her commitment to supporting staff and serving members and families.

“Our months-long nationwide search identified several excellent candidates, and Ann-Margaret stood out among them for her demonstrated leadership values, commitment to our Y mission, and her noteworthy operational achievements,” said YMCA Board Chair Michael Griffin. “We are thrilled to have identified a Y leader who brings the expertise, experience, and talents that align ideally with our Y’s future goals of keeping people at the center of our mission.”

While managing an $18M operating budget through membership, wellness, aquatics, childcare, and community engagement programs at Montclair, Gutierrez also filled a central role in launching a state-of-the-art early learning center serving 123 preschool-age children.

Gutierrez also helped to navigate the Montclair Y through the challenges of the COVID pandemic. With a focus on rebuilding stronger, Gutierrez worked to restore revenue to pre-pandemic levels while igniting more than 3% annual revenue growth for six consecutive years.

Prior to joining the Montclair Y in 2019, Gutierrez was senior executive director of the YMCA of Greater Boston, where she supervised two YMCA branches with combined operating budgets of more than $10M. Earlier, she served as senior program director at the YMCA of Greater New York.

Gutierrez also brings significant community engagement expertise, having established and led the East Boston Y’s New American Welcome Center and serving as executive sponsor of YUSA’s Hispanic Latino Leadership Network.

In her first months on the job, Gutierrez plans to focus on listening and learning, both from the YMCA staff and from members and community leaders across our service area. Gutierrez formally assumes the role of CEO of the Madison Area YMCA on Monday, November 2, succeeding retiring President & CEO Diane Mann, who has led the Organization since 2010.
