Pedestrian Hit, Critically Injured On Route 530 In Manchester, Police Say

MANCHESTER, NJ — A Manchester Township man was critically injured Sunday evening when he was hit by a car while crossing Route 530, Manchester police said.

Richard J. Fescharek, 43, of Whiting, suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune following the crash that was reported at 9:37 p.m., Capt. Albert Vega said.

Rocco Lanzetti, 63, of Wrightstown, was driving west on Route 530 in a gray 2013 Toyota Camry when Fescharek stepped into the road in the area of Swift Circle, Vega said. When police arrived they found Fescharek unresponsive and lying in a grassy area next to the road, he said.

Fescharek had been thrown about 50 feet to the northwest corner of the intersection after he was hit, Vega said.

Vega said the preliminary investigation indicated Fescharek was crossing the road improperly.

Route 530 was partially closed for several hours during the investigation and cleanup.

Assisting at the scene were members of Manchester Emergency Medical Services, Robert Wood Johnson paramedics, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and Accurate Towing, Vega said.

Patrolman Anthony DeBlasio of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
