Manville Runner Claims Second State Title, Leads Historic Track Meet Performance

Jayran Rodriguez, along with two teammates, qualified for the Meet of Champions at the NJSIAA Group 1 Indoor Track State Championships.

MANVILLE, NJ — Manville junior Jayran Rodriguez achieved his second state championship of the academic year, leading the Mustangs at the NJSIAA Group 1 Indoor Track State Championships.

Rodriguez previously became the school’s first Cross Country State Champion in the fall. He won the 3200m race with a school-record time of 9:31. Rodriguez pulled away from the field after a 4:44 opening mile.

Winter Track Head Coach Jeff Ruggini highlighted Rodriguez's dedication.

"For a runner like Jayran, there is no offseason; the seasons all blend together into one long grind," Ruggini said.

He added that an injury last winter fueled Rodriguez's performance. Ruggini noted that Rodriguez has become a front runner who approaches every race with the belief he can win.

Two other Manville athletes also qualified for the Meet of Champions. Kamille Aly tied the school record in the High Jump, clearing 5-0 to secure second place.

Aly demonstrated consistency and mental toughness in a high-pressure jump-off, according to Ruggini. He mentioned Aly's training with former MOC medalist Professor Ceo.

Damian Smutek delivered a strong performance in the 1600m race. After falling to last place at the start, Smutek recovered to finish third with a time of 4:28.

Ruggini described Smutek as a fighter, stating this was evident in his final lap. He expressed hope that Smutek could maintain momentum and run in the low 4:20s at the Meet of Champions.

Ruggini emphasized the collaborative effort within the program, building on the foundation established during the fall cross country season under Coach Kevin Caldwell.

Ruggini credited the team's intense culture, noting that Rodriguez receives daily pushes from teammates Smutek and Gabe Zala.

As the team prepares for the upcoming Meet of Champions, the focus is on recognizing the reward for their preparation.

Ruggini quoted Coach Markowitz, saying, "at this point, ‘we are playing with house money.’"

He concluded that the hard work and long runs are complete, and that Aly, Smutek, and Rodriguez have already made history, making this the enjoyable part of the season.
