Presented as part of Maplewood Black History Month 2026, this production honors Lorraine Hansberry’s enduring legacy and the continued relevance of her groundbreaking work. Set on Chicago’s South Side, A Raisin in the Sun follows three generations of the Younger family as they navigate competing dreams, financial strain, and systemic barriers. When an insurance check arrives following the death of the family patriarch, each member of the household envisions a different future, testing the bonds of love, hope, and dignity that hold them together.

Hansberry’s portrait of one family’s struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world remains a searing and timeless document of hope, resilience, and inspiration.
