Man Shot By Sayreville Police Officer

SAYREVILLE, NJ — A Sayreville Police officer shot a man Saturday night in that town, and the man survived being shot, announced Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and Sayreville Police Chief Daniel Plumacker.

The man's name has not been released. The prosecutor and police chief say the man approached the police officer and others with a knife, and he ignored commands from the police officer to drop the knife.

At 6:15 Saturday evening, Sayreville Police responded to the area of Kendall Drive in the Parlin section. Police were called there by people reporting a disorderly man armed with a knife menacing people and a car.

An officer encountered the man armed with a knife. The man ignored the officer’s commands to drop the knife and he advanced towards the police officer, said Estremera.

The officer fired his gun, striking the man. The man was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital – New Brunswick and was treated for his injuries.

Sayreville Police asked the public on Facebook Saturday night to avoid the area of Kendall Drive.

This officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office was designated as the independent investigator.

The name of the man was not released, nor was the name of the officer who shot him. Estremera also did not say how many times the man was shot. The man was charged with multiple offenses, but the prosecutor did not say which offenses.
