'Haunted' Prison Offering Tours In South Jersey

The jail along High Street held criminals for more than 150 years.

MOUNT HOLLY, NJ — The Burlington County Prison is opening its doors to visitors in October for a series of "haunted" tours.

The site housed criminals for 150 years and has been profiled by the likes of the SyFy Channel's, "Ghost Hunters," as one of New Jersey's most haunted sites.

"Regardless of whether you believe in ghosts or are just curious about the prison's history, this is an exciting time to visit," said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Allison Eckel.

After being met with costumed actors and special effects throughout the prison walls, all guests are invited to take part in an after-party in the prison yard.

This includes more family-friendly activities for those who may be too spooked to enter the jail.

Face painting, games, tarot card reading, ghost stories, music, and food vendors will all be part of the festivities.

Tickets can also be purchased for the after-party as a standalone admission.

The Burlington County Prison stopped housing criminals in 1965 and was turned into a museum.

Proceeds from the tours go towards the Historic Burlington County Prison Museum Association, according to the county.

The nonprofit group was responsible for being the first organization to advocate for the prison's preservation and continues to aid in its preservation.

Located at 128 High St., the facility once held the title of "oldest continuously used jail in America.
