Crossing Guard Who Ignored Adult Wasn't Being Racist, NJ Police Chief Says

MOUNT HOLLY, NJ — The Mount Holly police chief rejected a man's claim that a crossing guard discriminated against him by not escorting him across street in town.

Police Chief Cliff Spencer responded to the claim that was made in a video the man posted of himself crossing an intersection while berating the crossing guard.

"So if I get hit by a car, we know who is responsible," the man said in the video, according to NJ Advance Media, while also calling her "racist" and a "Karen."

"I'm not going to sit quietly while one of our hardworking crossing guards is publicly insulted and criticized for doing her job," Spencer said.

"Ironically, while attempting to publicly embarrass our crossing guard, this individual appears to have filmed himself disregarding the pedestrian signal and crossing against the displayed hand," the chief said.

Spencer said crossing guards are there primarily for the safety of school children and "are not personal escorts for adults who are fully capable of reading and following a pedestrian crossing signal."

Spencer said they will address and review the video further to account for any appropriate violations that may have occurred.

"Our crossing guards look out for Mount Holly's children every single day," added Spencer. "The least we can do is look out for them."
