Unique Airport, Resort May Be Replaced In South Jersey: See Why

MEDFORD, NJ — A small-town airport may be on its way out in favor of new affordable housing.

Medford Township Council unanimously approved Resolution 138-2026 on July 7, giving the "Flying W" airport and resort a new designated redeveloper, D.R. Horton, Inc.

The Township began planning for a potential overhaul of the land in 2017 in favor of contributing to the Housing Element and Fair Share Plan requirements the municipality must satisfy.

After the area met the criteria for an area in need of redevelopment without condemnation, the landowner of the Flying W approached the Township to be considered an affordable housing opportunity.

The original plan for construction included more than 380 homes, with 90 affordable apartments.

A later adjustment scaled the number of total homes back to 282, while keeping the 90 as designated for lower-earning residents.

The other homes will only be available to seniors.

Fostertown Road, LLC had previously been chosen as the redeveloper for the project, but the agreement was ended by the Township for unknown reasons.

According to NJ Advance Media, the Township anticipates construction to begin within the next three years after the developer completes all of the required submissions and they are approved.

Along with a restaurant, pool, a motel, and horses, the resort and airport has also provided flying lessons to guests during its decades-long run.

The Flying W is also remembered for its connection to a major loss in the music world.

A helicopter crash nearby killed country star Troy Gentry, 50, in 2017.

Along with Eddie Montgomery, the hit-making duo of "Montgomery Gentry" were scheduled to perform that night at the resort.

The Flying W grounds are located at 60 Fostertown Rd. and have been a part of the South Jersey community for more than 50 years.
