Reverse Glass Painting- Tuesday, October 27, 2026
Reverse glass painting is a technique of painting on the back side of a piece of glass so the image appears on the front. The first reverse paintings on glass were done in the Middle Ages in Europe. Later in the 18th century, missionaries brought the technique to China, where it flourished. Original paintings could be copied easily with this technique and were popular during the early 19th century in the United States. Two banjo clocks in the collection have reverse painting images of historical maritime events. Both are attributed to the Willard family, who were well-known clockmakers in Massachusetts. Before making your own masterpiece, you will visit the Museum's period galleries to see the original artwork to inspire your own!
