1 Dead, 1 Injured In Route 80 Multi-Vehicle Crash In Morris County

One of the drivers, a 91-year-old, was killed in the crash, authorities said.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — One person is dead and another is injured following a major crash on I-80 Thursday morning.

Around 8:45 a.m., police were called to I‑80 west at milepost 34.4 in Rockaway Township on reports of a crash.

Authorities discovered that a Chevrolet was reversing on the right shoulder of Exit 34B when it entered the exit lanes and was struck by a Hyundai, police said.

The Hyundai then crossed all lanes of travel and struck the rear of a Honda and the driver’s side of a Kia, officials added.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 91-year-old Boonton man, was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

The driver of the Kia sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital as well, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

State police are still investigating the crash.

The multi-vehicle accident resulted in all of I-80 west's lanes being closed in the area, according to the NJ Department of Transportation.

Officials said I-80 westbound was closed near Exit 34, with traffic being detoured using Exit 34B to Route 15 northbound.

All westbound lanes had reopened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
