I-80 Rest Stop To Shut Down For Days In Morris County: See Details

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A truck rest area along Interstate 80 in Morris County will close for three days as work continues on a $65.4 million bridge replacement project, state transportation officials said.

The I-80 westbound Truck Rest Area at milepost 32.3 in Mount Arlington is scheduled to close at 9 a.m. Thursday and remain closed until 6 p.m. Saturday, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The rest area is located just before Exit 30 for Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington.

NJDOT said the closure is necessary to stage construction vehicles while crews install steel beams for the I-80 bridges over Howard Boulevard.

Trucks already parked at the rest area when the closure begins Thursday morning will not be required to leave. However, no additional trucks will be allowed to enter after 9 a.m.

The rest area could reopen before Saturday evening if crews finish the work early, officials said.

The work is part of a $65.4 million federally funded project replacing the bridges carrying both directions of I-80 over Howard Boulevard/County Route 516. NJDOT says the existing bridges are in poor condition.

In addition to replacing the bridges, the project calls for raising their vertical clearance, widening shoulders and ramps, and lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes along I-80, officials said.

Pedestrian upgrades are planned as well, including ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station to improve pedestrian and bicycle access, according to NJDOT.

The overall project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
