​Get ready to build something real for Newark during <a href="https://luma.com/newarktechweek" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Newark Tech Week</a>! We're taking over Rutgers iHub for a full-day hackathon focused on solving problems that actually matter to the people who call this city home, from water safety to food access to just making city government easier to navigate.

​​Description:

​This hackathon challenges participants to pick a real issue facing Newark and build something that actually helps: a tool, an assistant, a dashboard, whatever gets the job done. Teams can dig into problem areas like environmental &amp; water justice, food access, cost of living, or civic transparency, or bring their own idea if they see a sharper angle. Expect AI to play a role in your build, but what we're really looking for is a solution that works. Judging will weigh usefulness and execution as heavily as technical approach.
​Technical Scope:

<ul><li>​Participants can use any technical stack they prefer (code-based, no-code, or a mix)</li><li>​Projects must be built from scratch during the hackathon, no prebuilt solutions</li><li>​Teams are free to choose one of our suggested problem areas or pitch their own. We'll share a few starting points at kickoff, but the direction is yours</li></ul>
​​Judging Criteria:

<ul><li>​Relevance &amp; Impact: Does this solve a real, specific problem for Newark residents, and could someone actually use it?</li><li>​Execution: How complete and functional is the prototype, given the short build window?</li><li>​Thoughtful AI Use: How and why did you use AI? A simple, well-executed approach counts; bonus points for teams who push further with multi-step reasoning or tool use where it genuinely fits the problem.</li><li>​Usability &amp; Creativity: Would a non-technical resident actually get it? Does the approach show real originality?</li><li>​Pitch &amp; Clarity: Can you clearly explain the problem, the solution, and who it's for in your demo?</li></ul>

M&amp;M’S® Halloween in Newark returns for its twelfth consecutive year, bringing the community together for two days of candy, costumes and Halloween fun, because “It’s More Fun Together.” This year, guests can&nbsp;add their own flair to pumpkin decor,&nbsp;step into a 360-photo booth to capture the celebration and visit&nbsp;the Mars candy station with Mars classic treats&nbsp;like M&amp;M’S, SNICKERS, SKITTLES&nbsp;and more. 

Attendees will also receive tote bags filled with an assortment of Mars products, festive goodies and can choose from a selection of size-inclusive costume kits (while supplies last).&nbsp; 

M&amp;M’S, alongside the City of Newark, will host these&nbsp;two community-wide events on Saturday, October 17 and at the JFK Recreation Center and Sunday, October 18, at the Marquis “Bo” Porter Sports Complex. 

To accommodate attendees with sensory sensitivities, there will be a designated “sensory/quiet zone” for guests with neurodivergence or anyone that needs to step away from the excitement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Equal Space ES550 Tech & Innovation Campus

Calling all New Jersey techies to the NJ Code and Coffee tech community meetup at the EqualSpace ES550 Tech &amp; Innovation campus!
Code and Coffee is an inclusive, informal networking/co-working session for those in tech (and the tech-curious). That includes operators, founders, and investors. Developers, data engineers, UX/UI designers, data scientists, product managers, software engineers, solution architects... all are welcome!
People of all skill and experience levels can attend, we love it that way. Many people (optionally) bring projects to work on, and many other people (optionally) socialize the entire time. It's entirely up to you!
Come grab a cup of coffee and meet new people, share stories, find collaborators, talk about everything tech, talk about everything NOT tech, take a break from job applications, get away from the computer screen, make connections, make conversation, make friends!
Agenda: 2pm: Doors open, networking starts 2:30pm: Intro circle 3pm: networking continues 5pm: event ends After 5pm: hangout at nearby brewery, Newark Local Beer
The Intro Circle Near the beginning of the event (about 2:30 pm), we will do a standup in a circle: We first talk about organizer announcements, updates, and logistics. Then we go around the circle where each person says:
<ul><li>your name and job title/ role in tech/ tech stack,</li><li>What you can help others with,</li><li>What you would like help with,</li><li>Job opportunities you're hiring for OR announce that you are looking for one. If none, that's cool.</li></ul>
After the introduction circle, everything is self-organized.
You MUST register first in order to get into the building.
