2026 Election Results For Newark Mayor, City Council (UPDATED)

NEWARK, NJ — Newark voters went to the polls on Tuesday to elect a mayor and several council members.
The city’s 2026 nonpartisan municipal election took place on May 12, including a highly watched mayor race. A runoff election between the top two vote-getters will take place on June 9 if no candidate receives a majority.

With 100 percent of votes reported, it appears that Ras Baraka has captured another victory as mayor of the largest city in New Jersey. The Associated Press called the race in his favor at 9:01 p.m.

Meanwhile, each of the incumbents on the city council had large leads as of Tuesday night.
The results remain unofficial, with some provisional and mail-in ballots still potentially uncounted. Here are the uncertified results from the Essex County Clerk’s Office (current leaders are in italics):

- Debra Salters – 873 votes (4.7%)
- Douglas Davis – 244 votes (1.31%)
- Jhamar Youngblood – 3,100 votes (16.7%)

- Tanisha Garner – 294 votes (1.58%)
- Nasheedah Singleton – 94 votes (0.51%)

MAYOR – Ras Baraka faced a challenge from seven candidates in the 2026 mayor race: Debra Salters, Douglas Davis, Jhamar Youngblood, Noble Milton, Tanisha Garner, Nasheedah Singleton, and Sheila Montague.
COUNCIL AT-LARGE – Four at-large city council seats were up for election. A total of 19 candidates ran for at-large seats on the council, including three incumbents: Louise Scott-Rountree, Luis Quintana, and C. Lawrence Crump. The challengers are: Joanette Hinnant, Donna Jackson, Nadirah Brown, Pablo Olivera, Malik Cooper, Yusuf Shabazz, Lamont Vaughn, Rasheen Peppers, Altarik White, Alonzo Herran Jr., Christina Cherry, Maria Lebron, Lynda Lloyd, Khalil Kettles, Josephine Garcia, and Edden Rivera.
COUNCIL WARDS – Fifteen candidates competed for council seats in their respective wards. Michael Silva ran unopposed in the East Ward.
