Teen Pedestrian Killed In Newark Crash, Mayor Says False Info Is Spreading Online

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — More details have been released about a fatal car crash that killed a 17-year-old pedestrian in Newark last weekend.

The crash took place near Bloomfield and Mt. Prospect avenues around 9 p.m. on Sunday. An adult female pedestrian was fatally injured. Her identity is not being released at this time, authorities said.

A suspect linked to the crash has surrendered himself to police and is in custody, police said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability have launched an investigation, although details were sparse as of Tuesday.

On Wednesday, city officials released more information, alleging that faulty rumors have been spreading online.

“I want to address misinformation that has been circulating on social media, including claims that this tragedy occurred as a result of Newark police pursuing a stolen vehicle,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.

“That information is false,” he said. “The vehicle was not stolen.”

The mayor said Newark has a strict policy prohibiting vehicle pursuits – except under limited circumstances involving serious offenses.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and I extend my deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” Baraka said. “No family should ever have to endure such a horrific loss, and our entire community mourns with them during this incredibly difficult time.”

Baraka said the city is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said police “offer their deepest condolences” to the family of the victim.

“The loss of a life due to a motor vehicle crash is always tragic and heartbreaking,” Miranda said.
