New Providence Green Leader Recognized As Sustainability Hero By Statewide Program
Doug Sullivan has chaired Sustainable New Providence for 11 years, helping the borough achieve Silver Certification.
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — A longtime local environmental advocate has earned statewide recognition for more than a decade of work helping New Providence pursue a greener future.
Douglas Sullivan has been named a Sustainability Hero by Sustainable Jersey, the state program that certifies municipalities for environmental achievement. The honor recognizes Sullivan's more than 11 years as chair of Sustainable New Providence and his leadership in guiding the borough's environmental initiatives.
Among his most significant contributions: Sullivan played a key role in New Providence achieving Sustainable Jersey Silver Certification in 2025 — a milestone the borough described as a major achievement for the community.

Since joining Sustainable New Providence in 2013, Sullivan has helped lead and support a wide range of programs and events, including:
- Freecycle Fest
- The New Providence Green Challenge
- Community cleanups and shredding events
- The annual Green Fair
- Development of the Community Energy Plan
- Expansion of the borough's Community Garden
Borough officials praised Sullivan's commitment to collaboration and community stewardship, saying his leadership has inspired residents of all ages and strengthened New Providence's commitment to environmental responsibility.
