When a Year Is Too Long: NJ Nonprofit Cuts Autism Wait Times

The Uncommon Thread

Across New Jersey, many families wait 9–12 months for an autism diagnostic evaluation, delaying access to therapy during the most critical years of early childhood development. A New Jersey nonprofit, The Uncommon Thread, is working to change that. For nearly 20 years, the organization has supported children with autism and their families. Now it has launched a coordinated 30-Day Pathway designed to move families from initial concern to diagnostic evaluation and evidence-based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in approximately one month whenever possible. This streamlined process supports families, pediatricians, schools, and diagnosing specialists by reducing delays and improving coordination of care. The organization leverages its extensive network of partnering specialists throughout NJ to help secure timely diagnostic evaluations and accelerate access to treatment. The nonprofit is also advancing earlier identification by leveraging EarliPoint, an FDA-cleared eye-tracking diagnostic tool that can detect autism risk as early as 16 months of age with about 90% accuracy. The Uncommon Thread provides early intervention services for children ages 1–5, when therapy can have the greatest impact on language, communication, and long-term developmental outcomes. “The system was never designed to move quickly enough for young children with autism,” said Greg Carr, Founder and Executive Director of The Uncommon Thread. “When families are told to wait six months, nine months, or even a year, that is a time in a child's development they cannot get back. We created the 30-Day Pathway because children cannot afford delays. The earlier we identify and intervene, the greater the opportunity to change the course of a child’s life.” As Autism Awareness Month approaches, the organization hopes to raise awareness about the importance of early identification and timely intervention. Gina's Tennis World will celebrate the grand opening of its third court on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 649 Springfield Avenue.
The addition comes with a new sign on Springfield Avenue that owner Gina Genovese hopes will finally put the longtime tennis club on the map for residents who may not have known it was there.
The grand opening will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Angie Devanney at 11 a.m. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., guests can try out HEAD demo rackets against a ball machine and test their skills by hitting targets for prizes.
Throughout the event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests can take photos with life-sized cutouts of tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. A raffle will give one lucky winner the chance to take a cutout home.
"After being in business for 43 years in Berkeley Heights, I am so excited to have the opportunity to have more kids and adults learning to love the game of tennis," Genovese said. "I still enjoy teaching even more than I did in 1983."
Tanvi Silvester, a former Gina's Tennis World player now in college, said the club's environment made all the difference in her experience learning the sport.
"I'd recommend Gina's Tennis World because it's such a friendly environment," Silvester said. "Starting a new sport can be intimidating at any age, and the environment you learn in plays a huge role in how much you end up loving the game. Gina, Wendy and the entire staff are so welcoming and kind. They make you want to come back and fall in love with tennis."
Julia Jarvis, a student and player at the club for 22 years, echoed that sentiment.
"Gina's Tennis World has always been community-focused, where everyone feels like family," Jarvis said. "It's not an ultra-competitive, toxic or intimidating culture, and it's a safe place to learn. This new chapter will let her share her gift with even more people, and I'm truly so excited for her and her world."

When you’ve lost someone dear, even ordinary days can feel heavy. Grief Share offers a gentle, supportive place to steady your footing, process your grief, and begin to rediscover hope. You’ll find people who understand, space to breathe, and guidance rooted in Christian care. ​ Our 13‑week group meets Mondays, September 14 through December 7, 7–8:30PM in the Wenman Room. The Fair this year features a SMART HOME AND BUSINESS ZONE: Discover practical ways to make your home or business more energy-efficient, comfortable, and sustainable. Meet local experts to see new technologies, find financial incentives, and get practical advice on how to save energy, save water, cut your bills, and cut carbon.&nbsp;&nbsp; Elsewhere learn some cool facts about bees, visit a bear den, learn about local nature walks and Morris County Park programs, pick up a free native plant or seed packet. Check out fully electric gardening equipment and see a robot lawn mower in action.&nbsp; Take a tour of the Borough's new Biodiversity Garden 11:00AM and 12:30PM. Talk to local owners about their experiences owning and driving an electric vehicle and check out the Borough's new EV Truck. The Fair is alongside the Farmer's Market with food trucks, live music, delicious produce, and other artisanal vendors.
