Stranger Enters Home, Hides In Bathroom In Union County

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — Police were called to a home in Berkeley Heights after a stranger was found hiding in the bathroom, police said.

On Saturday at around 9:20 p.m., a resident reported that they allowed an unknown man to come into the home and use the bathroom.

Once inside, the man entered the bathroom, turned off the lights and tried to hide from the homeowners and officers, said Berkeley Heights Police.

Police officers found the man and "took appropriate action to resolve the situation safely."

The department did not identify the man or provide additional details about what happened after officers found him.

Police used the incident to warn residents about letting strangers into their homes.

In its public message, the Berkeley Heights Police Department said, "Do not allow individuals you do not know into your home."

Police also advised residents to take precautions if someone unknown comes to their door asking for help.

"If someone you do not know approaches your residence and needs assistance, keep your doors secured and contact the Berkeley Heights Police Department if necessary," police said.

Additionally, police urged residents to report suspicious behavior right away.

"If you observe suspicious activity or feel unsafe, contact the Berkeley Heights Police Department immediately. In an emergency, dial 9-1-1," the department said.
