Beach Tag Proposal For Free Jersey Shore Beach Moves Forward
Officials estimated that the tag program could bring in about $230,000 in additional revenue.
UPPER TWP., NJ — One of New Jersey's few free beaches is taking the beginning steps to establish beach tags.
Upper Township has considered beach tags for Strathmere for several years. An ordinance to create a beach tag program was introduced at the latest Township Committee meeting.
According to the ordinance, a daily tag will cost $10, while a weekly tag will cost $20. A seasonal tag costs $45, or $30 if bought before President's Day weekend.

Veterans and active military members, with one guest, will have access to free beach tags.
Enforcement will include a roving patrol.

Some residents said the proposal conflicts with Strathmere’s identity as an open community.
“Strathmere is not an elitist community,” said Joyce Wilson. “We are a welcoming community. And I am very much opposed to beach tags.”
Officials estimated that the tag program could bring in about $230,000 in additional revenue, with enforcement costing about $24,000.
A public hearing and final vote will take place at the Aug. 24 Township Committee meeting.
