'A True Example Of Courage & Teamwork': Off-Duty NJ Lifeguard Saves Girl From Ocean

CAPE MAY, NJ — A New Jersey lifeguard is being recognized by the local community after conducting an after-hours water rescue on Wednesday evening.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Cape May Point Lifeguard Ryan Gibson was off-duty and playing volleyball with friends after finishing his shift when he noticed an 11-year-old girl had been pulled into the ocean by the rough currents.

Without hesitation, Gibson entered the water and conducted a rescue, Cape May Police said.

The girl had swallowed water and was treated on scene by emergency responders after she was brought to shore.

Gibson sustained minor scrapes and scratches from the rocks after pulling the girl onto a nearby rock jetty, police said.

Several other good Samaritans who were on the beach, including a professional photographer who was taking family photos, tried to assist in the rescue but quickly became overwhelmed by the dangerous ocean conditions.

Off-duty Cape May Point Lifeguards Ben Swan and Matt Gibson heard the rescue being broadcast and immediately responded to help as well.

"This incident is a great reminder of just how unpredictable and dangerous ocean conditions can be — and how important it is to have trained lifeguards ready to respond," police said.

"The Cape May Police Department is extremely proud of our friends at the Cape May Point Lifeguards. Ryan, Ben, Matt, and the other good Samaritans demonstrated tremendous courage, selflessness, and a commitment to helping others when it mattered most."
