Temporary Roosevelt Boulevard Traffic Pattern Change Set In Ocean City

Night concrete work on Roosevelt Boulevard in Ocean City will bring alternating traffic and expected delays near the bridge.

OCEAN CITY, NJ — Ocean City drivers should expect overnight delays this week on Roosevelt Boulevard/34th Street, County Road 623, as Cape May County continues work tied to the final surface course installation near the bridge.

According to a notice from the county, crews will complete remaining concrete work during the week of April 27. The work includes construction of a curb-lined concrete median at the easterly approach of the Roosevelt Boulevard bridge in Ocean City. The construction will be done at night, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The county said the contractor will reinstall the raised concrete median just east of the bridge on Wednesday and Thursday nights, April 29 and April 30. The new concrete median will be formed and concrete will be placed on those two nights. During those overnight hours, traffic crossing and approaching the easterly side of the bridge will alternate because the roadway is not wide enough to handle the construction activity and both active lanes at the same time.

Uniformed police officers will direct traffic at the easterly bridge approach so vehicles can alternate through the area, according to the notice. The county warned that delays should be expected, though normal traffic patterns will resume during the day.

Traffic will be maintained at all times during construction, and businesses will remain accessible, the notice said. Even so, travel times through the work zone will be longer, and motorists should plan for delays if they are heading through that part of Ocean City overnight.

The county said that after the concrete median is installed, construction activities are scheduled to continue during normal daytime working hours. Normal traffic patterns are expected to resume once that shift in work hours begins.

For drivers, the main change is limited to the overnight work window at the easterly bridge approach on April 29 and April 30. Anyone traveling in that area during those hours should allow extra time and be prepared for alternating traffic directed by police.

The work is part of the county's continuing roadway improvements on Roosevelt Boulevard/34th Street.
