Point Pleasant Beach Kicks Off America's 250th With 3-Day Celebration

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — Point Pleasant Beach is kicking off the celebrations of America's 250th birthday with a trio of events.

The three-day celebration begins Thursday with a concert at the bandshell along Little Silver Lake.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. with Kyle Jennings, a country music singer-songwriter, performing. The concert runs until 10 p.m.

On Friday, the borough will celebrate with a pair of patriotic movies, at the bandshell beginning at 7 p.m.

The first is a documentary on Leonard G. "Bud" Lomell, a World War II hero whose actions saved thousands of lives during the D-Day invasion at Normandy. Lomell, who grew up in Point Pleasant Beach and returned to Ocean County as an adult, led a group of Army Rangers who disabled the German guns that were firing on the soldiers on the beach. The new Veterans Affairs outpatient clinicin Toms River has been named for Lomell.

There will be commentary from Lomell's family to go along with the documentary.

That will be followed by the movie "Yankee Doodle Dandy," the 1942 film biographical musical about George M. Cohan.

The three-day celebration finishes up on Saturday with a parade in the morning followed by a block party that also will be held at the bandshell.

The parade is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and will march down Arnold Avenue from Shore Pools to the bandshell.

Arnold Avenue will be closed to traffic during the parade, Mayor Doug Vitale said.

The block party festivities, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will take place at the bandshell, Vitale said.
