Aside from building his own medical practice in Princeton for the last ten years, the surgeon has volunteered time treating patients in overwhelmed hospitals, war zones, and disaster areas at home and abroad. He was also a first responder during 9/11.
Hamawy made headlines in May 2024 when, while working as part of a medical and humanitarian aid mission, he became trapped in Palestine. He was soon safely evacuated.

Democrats across the nation have congratulated Hamawy on the landslide victory, including Senator Bernie Sanders.
“Congratulations to Dr. Adam Hamawy on his landslide victory tonight in the New Jersey 12th district Democratic primary,” Sanders wrote on X. “Dr. Hamawy will be a strong progressive voice in the House and, as a physician, he understands our healthcare system is broken, and we need Medicare for All.”
Also offering their support was Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who, after serving five terms representing NJ-12, is hoping to pass her reins to Hamawy.
“For the last six months, I’ve watched over a dozen committed public servants and community leaders, many of whom I have had the honor to call long-time friends, leave everything they had on the field in a difficult campaign to be our next Representative in the 12th Congressional District,” Watson Coleman said in a statement. “I congratulate Dr. Hamawy on his hard-fought campaign focused on healthcare, affordability, and an economy that works for all. The fight to protect our democracy against the Trump Administration requires everyone’s participation, and we now need to mobilize our neighbors and resources to help him get elected on November 3rd.”
Several organizations, including 314 Action, a grassroots organization focused on recruiting, training, and electing Democrats with a background in science to public office, have issued congratulations to Hamawy.
“Dr. Hamawy won because New Jerseyans trust him to get the job done—to fix our broken healthcare system and hold Trump and Republicans accountable in Congress,” said 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton in a statement. “Dr. Hamawy has seen the realities of war first-hand, and the deadly consequences that come when people don’t have access to the medical care they need. He’s put his own life on the line to save the injured in war zones across the globe and in emergency rooms in New Jersey. He will bring that same fight to Congress and stand up for the 12th Congressional District.”
Justice Democrats also cheered on Hamawy’s win, calling him a “political outsider with a vision that spoke to the needs and priorities of Jersey voters.”
Hamawy himself kept it simple following the win: “New Jersey -- we made history tonight. Healthcare not bombs. Abolish ICE. Unrig the economy.”
Come November 3, Hamawy will go toe-to-toe against Republican Gregg Mele, who ran unopposed for the GOP nomination in this year’s primary.
