Flood Watch Issued For Mercer County Through Monday Evening

Forecasters say over 2 inches of rain per hour is possible, raising flash flood risk.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ - The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Mercer County and much of the region, warning that additional heavy rain could trigger flash flooding through Monday evening.

The watch, issued by the National Weather Service in Mount Holly at 2:59 a.m. Monday, covers a wide swath of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and northern Delaware, including Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, and surrounding counties.

In Mercer, the warning has been issued for Princeton, Hopewell, Lawrence Township, East Windsor, Trenton, Ewing, and Hamilton.

The warning has been issued until 8 p.m.

Forecasters said additional heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to impact the area Monday, with localized rainfall of more than 2 inches per hour possible. That could lead to flash flooding, particularly in areas already affected by flooding Sunday evening.

The excessive runoff may cause rivers, creeks, and streams to rise out of their banks, with flooding also possible in areas with poor drainage and in urban locations, according to the weather service.

Officials are urging residents to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to act quickly if flash flood warnings are issued.
