Princeton To Mark 9/11 With Ceremony At Steel Beam Memorial

PRINCETON, NJ — Princeton will hold a public ceremony on Friday to remember those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and those who have since died or are suffering from related illnesses.

The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is set for 11 a.m. at the Steel Beam Memorial, 2 Mt. Lucas Road, and is open to all.

The ceremony will include a police honor guard, a bugler, a bagpiper and members of Princeton Emergency Services. Members of Princeton's liturgical community will lead the opening and closing.

This year's ceremony marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks. As part of the observance, a new plaque will be unveiled and added to the steel beam monument.

Attendees will be able to enter the names of loved ones who died on Sept. 11 or since of related illnesses into a registry kept as part of the memorial site, along with thoughts and memories of those individuals.

Tables will also be set up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for attendees to display photos of loved ones and others who were lost, along with items that reflect the events of the day.

Parking will be available in the Community Park Pool lot across from the Station 60 Firehouse on Witherspoon Street. Handicapped parking will be available in the lower lot of the Municipal Building, across from the memorial site.

Princeton University will also hold its own observance that day. The university's annual 9/11 Service of Remembrance takes place at the 9/11 Memorial Garden between Nassau Hall and Chancellor Green at 12 p.m., honoring the 14 Princeton alumni killed in the attacks.

The garden, established in 2003, includes a bronze bell that is rung in memory of each alumnus who died.
