Longtime Bergen County Teacher, 'Miss Peggy,' dies at 94
The teacher in Bergen County stayed in contact with some of her young charges into their adult years.
RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A woman who educated generations of Bergen County's youngest learners died on Wednesday.
Peggy "Miss Peggy" Mai Niemann, 94, died in hospice care at Valley Hospital, her obituary said. She grew up in Tennessee, met her husband at 21, moved to Ridgewood with him, and divorced in her early 30s.
"To support her family as a single-parent Peggy opened a family day care in her home while going back to school part-time in the evenings, earning her teaching degree in Elementary Education from William Patterson College after seven years," her obituary notes. She worked at several preschools and kept in touch with several of the students as adults, her obituary says. A service will be held next month, with guests encouraged to wear yellow, her favorite color.
