New Supermarket To Replace Closed Acme In Bergen County: See When It Will Open

EDGEWATER, NJ — Less than a month after 115 employees were laid off at the Acme supermarket in Edgewater Commons, a Shoprite is hiring staff so they can open soon at the same location.

The Acme at 481 River road filed a notice with the state earlier this year to lay off the employees and close by Aug. 15.

The spot, close to the Hudson River, will soon be home to a new Shoprite owned by the Inserra family.

The store has been hiring staff and posted on social media on Friday that they will open soon.

Edgewater Commons is located between River Road and the Hudson River, and is frequently passed by those traveling from Bergen toward Hudson County or Manhattan. The center also includes Target and HomeGoods.

A Shoprite spokesperson did not respond when asked for opening date, but a social media post last month said the store will open in fall.

The store is expected to have a pharmacy as well.

An Acme spokesperson said this year that their employees would be moved to other jobs or be given severance "in accordance with those agreements and laws."
