Entire Staff Of Bergen County Supermarket Laid Off: Here's When Store Will Close

The staff of a major Bergen County supermarket has gotten layoff notices, with the store set to close. Here's when.

EDGEWATER, NJ — A supermarket in Bergen County will close for good this summer, and the entire staff got layoff notices on Friday, a spokesperson confirmed.

According to a WARN notice filed with the state, 115 employees of Acme Supermarket in Edgewater will be laid off by Aug. 15.

A spokesperson for the parent company, Albertsons, said the market will close for good "on or about" that date, because the lease expired.

The market is located at 481 River Road, in the busy Edgewater Commons shopping center on the Hudson River. The center also includes Target and HomeGoods.

Spokesperson Dana Ward said in a statement, "The company’s priority is placing as many associates as possible in other locations. Human Resources and Labor Relations will work closely with affected associates and their unions, where applicable, to identify opportunities consistent with labor agreements and applicable law."

She added, "Associates who are unable to secure another position will be eligible for severance in accordance with those agreements and laws."
