Man Dies After Reported Lightning Strike In NJ, Police Say

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man has died following a reported lightning strike on Tuesday afternoon, Monroe Police told Patch.

At 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Monroe Police received a report of a man who had possibly been struck by lightning near a solar field on 355 Hoffman Station Road.

Police officers, along with Monroe Township EMS and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital paramedics, responded to the scene and found the man unconscious in the field.

The 32-year-old was then brought to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced deceased, police said.

The man's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The incident remains under active investigation, police said.

As of Wednesday morning, no additional information was available.

The reported lightning strike occurred around the time that severe storms began rolling into New Jersey on Tuesday, bringing with them power outages and severe flooding.

This incident is far from the first Garden State lightning strike this summer either.

In Bergen County, a lightning strike set a Ridgewood building on fire Monday night.

Before that, lightning sparked a house fire in East Windsor, rendering a home uninhabitable, and in Old Bridge, a condo was engulfed in a three-alarm fire after being struck by lightning.
