South Brunswick Woman, Sayreville Man Killed In NYC Subway Incident

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A South Brunswick woman and a Sayreville man, both 24, were killed early Sunday after being struck by a southbound 4 train in Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department and media reports.

The pair were seen sitting on the roadbed as the train entered the Spring Street station, moments before they were struck, NYPD said.

The duo was identified as Navam Kaul of Sayreville and Malaika Chitre of the Dayton section of South Brunswick, by MyCentralJersey and New York Post.

Police responded to a 911 call at 3:14 a.m. Sunday. The train operator was unable to stop in time, and both were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

It is unknown why the two were on the tracks. The investigation remains ongoing.

Both were longtime friends and 2024 Rutgers University graduates.

Chitre graduated from South Brunswick High School in 2020 and from Rutgers University in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in public health and a minor in business administration.

She was working as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals and began pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Temple University School of Pharmacy in August 2026, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Kaul graduated from Sayreville War Memorial High School in 2020 and from Rutgers Business School in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in finance. He had been working as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg since May 2025, according to his LinkedIn profile.
